Transforming Campaign Signs into Cleaner Energy

Over 38,000 pounds of yard signs turned into fuel for Cemex’s Brooksville plant.

After election season, Cemex collaborated with Resource Depot, Hillsborough County, Palm Beach County, and NuCycle to divert over 38,000 pounds of campaign signs from landfills. These non-recyclable signs were repurposed into Enviro-Fuelcubes at NuCycle’s Plant City facility and now help fuel Cemex’s Brooksville cement kiln.

This innovative initiative highlights Cemex’s commitment to waste reduction and resource management. “Transforming campaign signs into Enviro-Fuelcubes shows how teamwork and creativity can benefit the environment,” said Erik Estrada, Cemex Brooksville Plant Manager.

The program demonstrates how collaboration can tackle complex waste challenges, repurposing materials into sustainable energy solutions. Learn more about how Cemex is driving environmental innovation in Hernando County.

To promote cleaner and greener fuels, we’ve invested millions in new technologies and techniques. That’s just one of the reasons Cemex was named to Fortune’s “Change the World” list of 50 companies “doing well by doing good.” We strive to be part of the solution. So, we’ve harnessed the power of renewable fuels like recycled waste and even peanut shells to run our machinery more efficiently. In fact, the US Environmental Protection Agency honored our Hernando County facilities with the coveted ENERGY STAR ® certification, which recognizes high standards of energy efficiency. We work hard to maintain those standards by deploying energy conservation and monitoring technologies, promoting energy awareness among our workers, and completing energy reduction projects—all of which contribute to a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future.
